Superheroes are everywhere.

Over the last decade comic book characters have taken over pop-culture. Most of them are anything but new. The most iconic heroes and villians have been around since the 1940's. So why have they taken over the entertainment industry now? What makes them so enduring and popular?

They've endured because of how they appeal to our inner fantasies. As kids we're drawn to the dreams of strength and power they represent. It's nice to see ourselves as an invincible hero with no reason to ever be afraid. Characters like Superman and Captain America represent the best of what we aspire to be. Really, superheros have always enjoyed a pretty high level of popularity. With the advances in special effects and movies, the characters come to life and we're able to see what the world might actually look like through the eyes of a superman. Which brings me to...

My concept for Artprize this year:

Illustrate the classic comic book theme of good vs. evil. The heroes win through self sacrifice and determination. A series of four panels, the shapes are similar to what you'd see in the pages of a comic book. Visually, it'll be dynamic, colorful, and energetic. Expect to see a HUGE superhero battle, iconic Grand Rapids structures being destroyed, and a dramatic moment between two people to end the story.

I'm hoping to participate in Artprize for the 4th time, and if I've learned anything, it's "go BIG". So, I'm making this is one extra huge, measuring 100" wide (Over nine feet!), and 50" tall. Each canvas is 2.5" deep, and other than space, my paintings won't require anything special to install.

Some of the heavy lifting is done, but I've still got a lot of work in front of me. Hopefully, the graphics below will give you a good idea of what the final piece will be. However, if anyone would like more explanation, please feel free to email me or even stop by for a visit to the studio.

Thank you!
